Knowing the recipient's interests and background on the wild animal adoption program will help in deciding which wildlife adoption program to chose as a Christmas present

In the last ten years wild animal adoption programs have become a great way for wildlife conservation programs to raise funds to continue their work while giving the public a more personal way to be involved. For the Christmas gift recipient, wildlife adoption programs provide education about the species being adopted and the threats to their habitats.

Adopting a wild animal makes the Christmas gift recipient feel good in two ways. First, he has the enjoyment of following his personal animal and second he is helping a species he is interested in. And the gift giver can feel good about where the money is going.

But there are so many Adopt a Wild Animal choices now it can be difficult to decide which organization and which animals to help. The types of adoption also vary depending, on the what organization does. Wildlife rehabilitation facilities, sanctuaries, wildlife researchers and wildlife conservation organizations have different ways of utilizing adoption programs.

Adopting an Individual Wild Animal as a Christmas Gift

The wild animal up for adoption is often one that has been brought in for rehabilitation after being orphaned or injured. These animals may be followed during their stay in care and afterward if they are being tracked by satellite or radio to ensure that the release was a success. If volunteering at a wildlife center is not possible this is a wonderful Christmas gift that allows the recipient to participate in the rehabilitation of an animal who will go back to the wild.

For many species there is not enough known about their diet and habitat needs. Wildlife conservation researchers attempting to find these things out must also use radio and satellite tracking to follow their study animals. For these programs, the adopt a wild animal gift helps fund the study of animals in the wild. Being part of the effort to learn about wildlife in their natural habitat be the perfect Christmas gift for those who have a secret wish to be a field biologist.

Adopting A Wild Animal in a Sanctuary

Sanctuaries for wild animals that cannot be released back to the wild must also cover expenses for the care the animals. Their Christmas gift adoption programs also allow the recipient to track the progress of the animal they have adopted. Being part of seeing an animal adapt to its new home can be fun and animals in sanctuary are less likely to face the types of dangers those in the wild come up against.

For those who love pictures and stories about individual wild animals these first two types of adoption plans would make the best Christmas present. Deciding between the two can be based on whether the recipient gets excited when they learn about animals being returned to the wild or whether they feel a personal interest in animals that are in need of permanent care.

Make a Christmas Present of a Wildlife Species

Finally, some wildlife conservation organizations have programs where it is possible to adopt a species. The money put into the adoption program is used to fund everything from lobbying for protection of a species to buying conservation land to ensure habitat for that species. If someone on the Christmas list has a particular interest in a species and would be more interested in the overall conservation of that animal, adopting a species may be most appropriate.

These Adopt a Wild Animal programs are just one of many ways to include wildlife conservation in Christmas celebrations. Conservation minded people should also consider a living Christmas tree.
